How to Prepare Your Cooling System for Spring

The Importance of Preventative Maintenance

Spring is in the air! Is your air conditioning system ready to handle the warm Myrtle Beach weather?

Our heat pumps and air conditioners work hard during the hot months to keep cool air circulating in our homes. The last thing you want to be left without in the middle of summer is the A/C! To ensure your system will run smoothly all season long, we recommend performing maintenance on your HVAC system.

Regular preventative maintenance prevents the risk of breakdowns by catching the small issues before they turn into bigger problems. Maintaining your HVAC system also improves energy efficiency and extends the life of your system, which saves you money in the long run.

We recommend performing maintenance on your cooling system in the early spring, so you have peace of mind when the weather really heats up! We’ve prepared a list of tasks you can do right now to help maintain your unit.

HVAC Maintenance for Homeowners

Check and replace your air filters.

Filters remove dust and debris from the air, so they are not spread throughout the home. Clean filters also allow your system to heat and cool more efficiently. We recommend checking your filters once a month and replacing them if dirty.

Clear debris from the outdoor unit.

As you start to clean up your yard from the winter season, make sure you also remove the debris on and around your outdoor unit. Leaves, twigs, pine needles, and grass clippings can block proper air flow.

Check for standing water in the drain pan.

The condensate drain pan collects condensation left from the cooling process. If this pan is clogged with algae build-up, you run the risk of water overflowing and damaging your home. If you notice standing water in the pan, call CTC to clean your condensate drain!

Seal air leaks around windows & doors.

If you notice cool drafts in the winter, you’ll likely feel warm drafts in the spring and summer. Sealing air leaks around your windows and doors reduces the amount of cool air that escapes your home. This will help your cooling system run more efficiently. Sealing leaks can also improve your indoor air quality by preventing allergens like pollen, dust, dander, and mold spores from entering.
